What is the correct website design?

Nowadays, there are infinite websites that offer a variety of products and services to internet users. Worse still, there are dozens, maybe even hundreds of business websites that offer exactly the same product or service as you and are just a click away!

In fact, this may not be the case. You may, for example, offer better service or better technical support than your competitors. But your website visitor may not know this, at least not until he becomes your customer. Whether or not you turn him from a mere visitor to your website to a customer, depends on numerous factors.

An extremely important factor is the first impression a user will make when they enter your website and the overall picture that your website presents. These parameters depend directly on whether your website design is correct.

Surveys that determine the features that a correct website design should have

Researchers use a variety of ways to determine which features a proper website design should have. Since the 1980s, human-computer interaction research has been underway. In the same decade, eye-tracking was widely applied in various research areas such as psychology, psycholinguistics, marketing, etc. as an input device for human-computer interaction and product design.

Features that a correct website design should have

From research we have studied and through our many years of experience in web design and web development, we have gathered the features that a correct website design should have and briefly present it to you:

COLORS

The background color must produce calm and relaxation. Prefer earthy and light colors (white, pale gray, pale blue, pale green, pale yellow, etc). Dark and bold colors should be avoided.

Great attention should also be paid to the contrast of the text with the background so that the texts are clearly visible and readable.

PICTURES

Do not post snapshots on your website, that you hurriedly took with your mobile. Use a camera or better yet, hire a professional photographer. For your products, you could use a (mini) photo studio.

Use a specific size of images, approximately square, for all your images (eg product images or article images).

Using inappropriate images or irrelevant to the content of your website should be avoided. You should also avoid using too many images as you distract visitors from what is important on your website (unless you are a photographer).

A large picture on your homepage is good to have.

If you can't photograph what you want to present on your website, you can hire a web designer to create graphic designs that will represent what you want to present.

MENU

The main menu should be either at the top of the web page or on the left and preferably contain from five to seven menu items. Many menu items at the bottom (footer) of your website or on the right side are confusing. Finally, the submenus should be hidden in the main menus.

TEXTS

There should be consistency in the color, size, and font of all texts on your website. Full-text alignment may be more beautiful than left alignment, but texts are more difficult to read.

Do not make large sentences, as they are difficult to understand. Also, prefer to divide your text into short paragraphs.

CLASSIFICATION

Content, such as images and texts on your website, should be properly and nicely arranged within your website. Texts around images or texts within images are usually difficult to read.

SPACESProper use of spaces between all the elements of your website is important. Small gaps do not allow the content to be properly separated and huge gaps do not highlight the content.

CONTENT

The content, that is, the texts and images of your website should be directly related to what you want to present on your website (your business, your portfolio or your products and services).

NAVIGATION

Users should constantly know where they are inside your website. The use of breadcrumbs is mandatory.

SPEED

Users hate delays. They want to find a lot of information as fast as they can. Prefer simple templates without lots of animated graphics and huge images, as they can significantly slow down the speed of opening your website.

DIRECT ACCESS

Users prefer to get as much information as possible in as few steps as possible. Try to give as many categories of information as you can on your homepage.

Take special care of the visitors returning to your website. Content categories such as 'Recent Products / Articles', 'Recently Viewed' or 'Related Products / Articles' are a must to have.

Avoid pages, within pages, within pages, as users usually use the back button and get lost within your website and eventually they abandon it.

SIMPLICITY AND COHERENCE

Users avoid complexity. Your website should be simple, ordinary and follow the rules of logic. The overall design and navigation of your website should follow the general design rules that users are familiar with.

INTEGRITY AND STABILITY

An old or problematic website certainly reduces users' trust in your website.

Do not surprise your visitors! Every webpage of your website should follow the same pattern.

Avoid pop-ups. Users want to have complete control over events while navigating to your website. An extra move of a user and the time required to close a pop-up window can adversely affect the overall impression. A pop-up window, once the user decides to close your website tab, can slightly increase their stay time, but can also irritate them.

Take special care of the links, as they may lead to non-existent pages (404 errors). Also beware of flash player objects and Google Maps, as they may not properly load into your website.

ASPECT OF OTHER USERS

Users like to see other users' point of view. Embed the Facebook SDK into your page.

Better yet, create a rating system and/or a review system inside your website(!) and encourage your customers to rate you.

SOCIABILITY

People like to see that you are social. Highlight social network links, but be sure to refresh the content on whatever social networks you decide to network.
